CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HONORS OUTSTANDING PUERTO RICANS

The Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of South Florida ( Miami-Dade County ) held its annual “Maurice A. Ferre Puerto Rican Achievers Award” Luncheon at the Doubletree Grand Hotel in Miami on Wednesday, February 28.  There were two recipients of this award.

The first recipient was Mr. Raymond Santiago, Director of the Miami-Dade County Public Library system.  In this position, Mr. Santiago is responsible for a County-wide department with over 750 employees and 43 facilities.  In receiving the award, he indicated that he considers it a privilege to work for the library system, and how proud he was to receive the award.

The second recipient was Ms. Teresa  Albizu-Rodriguez, Vice President of Carlos Albizu University.  Carlos Albizu University is the first university, founded in Puerto Rico, to successfully establish a campus on the U. S. mainland.  In her acceptance remarks, Ms. Albizu-Rodriguez stated that Chambers of Commerce, business organizations and community leaders must recognize that education is essential to a qualified work force and economic development.  She urged that everyone contribute to scholarship programs to enable all qualified students – irrespective of their economic status - to receive a higher education.

In addition to these awards, a Special Recognition Award was presented to Mr. Eddy Leal, Director of Marketing for the State of Florida with Anheuser-Busch, for his commitment – as a Puerto Rican professional – to serving the community.

Our guest speaker was Mr. Barry Johnson, President / CEO of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, who has demonstrated, throughout his career, a dedication to promoting business development through our community.
